It’s only been about a month into summer and we are experiencing record high temperatures in many parts of North America, resulting in heatwaves. In Western Canada, temperatures hit a new heat record of 121-degrees (Fahrenheit). In Salem, Oregon, the temperature reached 117-degrees on Monday, June 28, 2021. In the Northeast, many states experienced temperatures in the high 90s, nearing 100-degrees.
What is a Heatwave?
According to the National Weather Service, a heatwave happens when abnormally hot weather lasts for two or more days. However, the definition varies region by region. For example, in New York, a heatwave happens when temperatures of at least 90 degrees last for at least 3 consecutive days.
Here are 5 ways to protect your facility from the heatwave:

Check all AC units to make sure they are working properly.

Install weather-strip doors to keep the cool air in and the heat out.

Close all windows shades and exterior and shipping bay doors.

Conserve power by turning off unused equipment and lighting.

Have emergency supplies on hand in case the power goes out: flashlight, batteries, and a first aid kit.
Prolonged exposure to high heat and humidity can lead to heat-related illnesses. So, stay indoors as much as possible. It is highly recommended that you listen to your local weather channel for updates on the high-temperature hours.
