Did you know that car emissions are the single largest source of greenhouse gases (GHGs) emitted in the U.S.? You may have heard about GHGs in 5th grade science class, or on the news when they are talking about the main causes driving the climate change crisis. In the simplest of terms, GHGs are gases in the Earth’s atmosphere that make our planet warmer. An over-abundance of GHGs can cause floods, tornadoes, and other unpredictable weather patterns and occurrences.
Many of us are experiencing the devastating effects that climate change has on us and our communities, and are beginning to understand the serious consequences for the immediate future and future generations.
In this post, we wanted to highlight a few of the ways that the U.S. government and businesses are currently working on and planning to reduce GHGs in the transportation sector
Electrify Government Vehicles
In January 2021, the federal government pledged to electrify its fleet of 650,000 vehicles. Just recently, the new administration put forth a $2 trillion infrastructure plan that included $174 billion in EV investments.
Investment in EVs Infrastructure
Also included in the infrastructure plan are investments to build and support a network of 500,000 charging stations by 2030. Over 40 states are offering grants and incentives for setting up EV charging stations.
